Picó: sound system culture from the Colombian Caribbean

Picós are the sound systems typical of the Colombian Caribbean. These robust systems, known for their vibrant aesthetics bring communities together, fostering an independent scene, and even serving as economic providers. They are especially significant in socially excluded urban areas, influenced by historical race and class issues.

Picó culture has shaped the identity and sense of belonging within the Afro-Colombian community, amplifying African rhythms like Highlife, Benga, Mbaqanga, and soukous, and Caribbean styles like Soca and Zouk. Their influence is evident in Champeta, a rhythm and dance and movement from Cartagena de Indias.
Edna Martinez explores this rich cultural phenomenon in her lecture “Picó: Sound System Culture from the Colombian Caribbean” – offering a comprehensive sonic journey that delves into the rich connection between Africa and the Caribbean”.

Jungelen is a Bergen cultural organisation, started by Simon Alejandro Larsen in 2016. Throughout the year, Jungelen presents club and concert nights, DJ workshops and the music festival Jungelfest in January.

Plattform is Bergen Kunsthall’s series of lectures and debates with artists and prominent thinkers. Expanding on topics of our exhibitions and events, they give a chance to engage or dig deeper.
