Script for a New Reality

Athena Farrokhzad, poet, playwright, translator and professor, talks about how literature can propose a new script for reality. Based on her latest publication TRAGEDIERNA (Albert Bonniers forlag, 2025), she explores the political potential of drama and writes further on three classic plays from antiquity: Euripides’ MEDEA, Sophocles’ ANTIGONE and Aeschylus’ PERSEANS.
Farrokhzad made her debut with VITSVIT (2013), which has been translated into twenty languages. She has since published the poetry collections TRADO (2016), I RÖRELSE (2019) and ÅSNANS ÅR (2022). The latter was recently published in Nynorsk in a translation by Ida Hove Solberg (Anno Asen, Samlaget, 2025). She has translated a dozen poetry collections and written stage texts for theatres in Sweden, Norway, Germany and Turkey.
The lecture at Bergen Dramatikkfestival is organised by Cornerstone in collaboration with Bergen Kunsthall. It is presented ahead of Bergen Kunsthall’s premiere of A LETTER TO EUROPE by Nazanin Noori, an interpretation of Athena Farrokhzad’s ‘Open Letter to Europe’. Commissioned by Bergen Kunsthall, A LETTER TO EUROPE premieres on September 20. The lecture will be conducted in Swedish.
