This February in Bergen, two exhibitions find their origins in caves. At Northing, the solo exhibition by Qi Tan, “What’s Inside What’s Inside”, departs from the artist’s grandmother’s experience of a grotto in China. At Bergen Kunsthall, the group exhibition “Iter Subterraneum” takes inspiration from Ludvig Holberg’s novel about Niels Klim and his fall through a cave at Fløyen, a mountain in Bergen, toward the centre of the Earth. Playing on the synchronicity, a collaboratively curated two-day event weaves together the mythologies of both exhibitions and the perennial appeal of the subterranean.
On February 11, Qi Tan presents two recent CGI films that animates new spiritual realms and imagines silicone-based life as an alternative to our carbon-based one. The artist will also share insight into the making of her newly opened exhibition “What’s Inside What’s Inside” at Northing. In conversation with curators Ben Wenhou Yu and Silja Leifsdottir, Qi Tan expands on the project’s interest in experiences of the mystical and the unseen, and the ways it shapes body, language, and landscape.
