Inspired by the traditional whale hunts of Lamalera, on the island of Lembata in Indonesia, Tianzhuo Chen and Siko Setyanto’s performance work Ocean Cage explores the complex entanglement of tradition and ritual with ecology and modernisation. Musician Nova Ruth, who performs in the work, also runs a seventy-ton sailing ship Arka Kinari, a nomadic artistic platform on a voyage to promote resilience to climate change and re-engagement with the sea. Together, they explore how this research and activism intersect in their work and how the specific contexts of Indonesia can connect with a broader conversation about art and the environment.
