Practice Models is an ongoing event series that takes a behind the scenes look at the nature of architectural practices in Bergen with a focus on the way a practice is started, structured and run as well as the stories of those at the center of it all. The series aims to shine a light on the design of practice itself and the intertwined role this plays in its direction and output. In doing so, it seeks to highlight the richness and diversity of practices, to inspire, stimulate community and dive into how architecture is practiced today.

PRACTICE MODELS #6
The sixth edition of practice models focuses on practices whose education and background is within architecture and which have eventually expanded into or pivoted towards other related creative disciplines: PART – an architecture, rendering and graphic design practice who also run a bar (Part Bodega) and a future exhibition space, Anders Rubing – architect, founder and editor-in-chief of the Nordic Review of Architecture, freelance writer and architecture critic for the likes of Bergens Tidende and Arkitektur N and Northing – Centre for East Asian Art and Culture made up of an exhibition venue, an art book publisher & design studio and and art & design bookshop. PART
PART is an interdisciplinary creative studio, the outcome of two existing practices OK Kontor (2016) and Studio Boi (2017) joining forces, that works at the intersection of architecture, design and visuals including graphic design, illustration, animation, editorial design, identity and digital design.
The practice operates out of three departments, each working both on specific projects in their main fields, but also together as an interdisciplinary team on complex projects.
PART Architecture works within a vast range of architectural topics from creative solutions for complex building programs to smaller living and design projects.
PART Design works with a wide range of clients, mainly focused on projects within the cultural field. Projects include both print and digital work: visual identity, editorial design, web design, UX, packaging, art direction, signage, and wayfinding.
PART Visuals focuses on creating detailed and evocative imagery with a wide range of clients ranging from architecture studios, to creative organizations, developers and individuals, to help tell their project’s stories through visualizations.
In addition, the practice runs PART Bodega, a bar and cultural venue that aims to contribute to the creative community locally by being a social meeting place, arranging lectures, workshops and debates.

ANDERS RUBING
Anders Rubing is an architect, editor, critic, writer, teacher and PhD Candidate.
Rubing is the founder and editor-in-chief Nordic Review of Architecture (NORA), a journal specialized in architectural criticism that is both a supplement and a critical friend to the established architectural journals in the Nordic region.
Rubing is a freelance architecture critic for professional journals and newspapers. He serves as the architecture critic for Bergens Tidende as well as regularly contributing to Arkitektur N, Norway’s Architecture magazine.
Rubing is currently finishing his PhD at the University of Bergen with the working title “Loop learning” which looks to expand on how visions of different urban futures can be understood in relation to an urban security and ‘resilience’ discourse. Specifically, the project wants to look at how urban security and ‘urban resilience’ are communicated in national and international professional environments and between professional environments and individuals and what it can tell about different visions of an urban future. The project has a particular focus on looking at these urban futures for vulnerable groups in society such as migrant groups and racialized groups.
Rubing has previously researched the breaking point between security and the right to democratic expression in public space and how security architecture changes cities and other urban systems. Rubing was co-editor and project manager for the multiple award-winning book The City Between Freedom and Security, Contested Public Spaces in the 21st Century, which deals with the same theme. The book has won the Dam Architectural Book Award 2017 and the Swedish Book Award 2017. Rubing frequently lectures on security, architecture and the right to public space in the city. In addition, Rubing has a broad experience from architectural practice on projects of various scales and types, site development and interiors.
Rubing graduated from Bergen School of Architecture (BAS) in 2012 and actively teaches in the master and diploma programmes at the same institution.

NORTHING
Northing – Centre for East Asian Art and Culture is the first and currently only non-profit contemporary art centre focusing on promoting cultural exchange between Norway and East-Asia. The center is founded and run by Yilei Wang and Ben Wenhou Yu.
In Norway, Northing endeavours to provide East-Asian artists that are already living and working here with exhibition opportunities and stages to reach a wide local audience. At the same time, Northing creates possibilities of head-on communication and collaboration between Norwegian artists and their colleagues in East-Asia. Through its cross-disciplinary activities, including exhibition program, publications and cultural events, Northing wishes that East-Asian art and culture enrich the diversity of cultural life in Bergen and the whole Norway.
Currently, Northing has three major functions: the exhibition venue Northing Space, the art book publisher and design studio Kinakaal, and the tiny art and design bookshop Elephanten. Northing is developing a bookmaking workshop, and more cultural and educational functions in the coming years.
