In both film and music women have often been at the forefront of artistic discoveries through new technology. However, many of these women worked behind the scenes and their artistry was often not recognized until much later times. In the early 1900s film industry much of the pioneering editing work was done by women. One of them was Yelizaveta Svilova, a Soviet film editor and cinematic genius. Svilova edited “Man with a Movie Camera” – an experimental 1929 Soviet silent documentary film. The film presents urban life in Moscow and the Ukrainian cities Kyiv and Odesa during the late 1920s. From dawn to dusk Soviet citizens are shown at work and at play – interacting with the machinery of modern life
In honor of Svilova’s and other women’s technical artistry we invite you to an anachronistic journey into the urban dusk. Inspired by early Soviet cinema, this will be an experimental club experience dedicated to the intersection of film and music where we continue to play and interact with the technology of modern life in the form of DJing and VJing.
