On the occasion of Tygapaw’s live performance as part of Bergen Kunsthall’s Knowing We Won’t Have Each Other Forever, we are thrilled to have Tygapaw aka Dion McKenzie as part of our Plattform series.
Tygapaw will give insights on their influences, the importance of reclaiming Black histories in techno music, creating spaces for QTPOC and their work between music and visual arts.
Dion Mckenzie known as TYGAPAW, is a one-person army on a mission to highlight inclusivity and displacement through sound. TYGAPAW, is a Producer, DJ and Artist, originally from Mandeville, Jamaica, and based in Brooklyn, New York. A polymathic artist injecting their Jamaican heritage into techno, TYGAPAW operates at the intersections of their musical and cultural roots. They infuse the raw energy of dancehall with their signature emotional club sound. The self-taught producer founded monthly club nights Shottas, No Badmind and Fake Accent, creating platforms and spaces for QTIPOC. Their debut album GET FREE (2020) explores black joy, the active dismantling of imagined limitations, and the eradication of self doubt using techno landscapes.
Active in the visual arts, TYGAPAW’s work was presented at Creamcake Berlin and as part of the group show Dance Trans*Revolution at apexart gallery New York City. Live highlights include MoMA PS1, Boiler Room (Toronto, LA), Berghain, AFROPUNK, Toronto Pride, Moonshine (Montreal), Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston, Miami), alongside NYC institutions Webster Hall, Knockdown Center, Brooklyn Museum, Bossa Nova Civic Club, Elsewhere, Nowadays and more.
Plattform is Bergen Kunsthall’s series of lectures and debates with artists and prominent thinkers. The event will be live streamed on our website.
