The Performative Lecture, The Labour of Memory by Eliot Moleba and Merete Røstad, seeks to expand the understanding of memory by exploring it as an embodiment of sensorial practice and as an extended social vocabulary. Memory work resides in our everyday rituals and social relationships as well as in monuments and traditions of remembrance. Accordingly, in our extended artistic practice, we look at the politics of remembrance and forgetting by focusing on our participatory experiences as witnesses in the public sphere.
Merete Røstad is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and artist researcher whose projects are rooted in examining collective memory, representation, and archives in the public sphere. Røstad is an Associate Professor in Art and Public Space (MFA) and head of research at the Department of Arts and Craft at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO).
Eliot Moleba is a researcher, playwright, and theatre director. He is one of the founding members of PlayRiot, a collective of playwrights committed to telling bold, contemporary South African stories. He was the resident dramaturg at The South African State Theatre. He is currently a Research Fellow at KHiO and an Editorial Committee member of VIS – The Nordic Journal for Artistic Research. He is also a member of MEMORYWORK, an international interdisciplinary research project.
Plattform
Plattform is Bergen Kunsthall’s series of lectures and debates with artists and prominent thinkers. This season we present talks and conversations that expand on the ideas of our summer exhibitions with Lene Berg and Damla Kilickiran, and Cruising Utopia – the first live project of 2022. The talks will dive into central themes of Lene Berg’s work: memory, storytelling and working at the intersection of visual arts and film. Italian philosopher Federico Campagna’s contemporary take on the reconstruction of realities has been a strong inspiration for Oslo-based artist Damla Kilickiran.
The Festival Exhibition
The Festival Exhibition is Bergen Kunsthall’s flagship exhibition, established in 1953. Each Summer, we present a large scale exhibition with new work by a Norwegian artist, in connection with the Bergen International Festival (Festspillene i Bergen). The exhibition is considered the most important solo presentation fora Norwegian artist in their home country and creates a national debate about the state of the art, similarly to the Turner Prize in the UK.
