Aileen A. Espiritu

On the closing weekend of Toril Johannessen’s exhibition “Deterrence and Reassurance”, Bergen Kunsthall invites you to a talk by Aileen A. Espiritu. She is a researcher at The Barents Institute at the UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, located on the borderlands between Norway, Russia and Finland in the Arctic.

Her research is on sustainable development in the Arctic, including public diplomacy, transnational region-building in the Arctic and the Barents Region, questions of identity politics in indigenous and non-indigenous Northern communities and the politics of community sustainability in Russia and Norway in comparative perspective. With regards to border studies, Espiritu has researched and analysed cross-border and transnational relations in the Barents region within the prism of geopolitics, neo-liberal economics and culture.

Espiritu will focus on the inventive and creative ways that people-to-people cultural public diplomacy is being waged in the borderlands with Russia, stretching from Arctic Norway to Eastern Europe.

Plattform is Bergen Kunsthall’s series of talks and debates with artists and prominent thinkers. The event will be live streamed on our website.
