On the occasion of Toril Johannessen´s Festival Exhibition 2024: “Deterrence and Reassurance”, Bergen Kunsthall invites you to a talk with Philippe Rekacewicz on “Radical Mapping: A Practice Between Art, Science, and Politics”. During the talk, Rekacewicz will unfold the social and political complexities embedded in maps.

There is no such thing as an innocent map.

Cartography has been torn between science and art for a long time. Both scientists and artists have claimed ownership of the discipline due to the complexity of what a map represents. A map uses data that must be handled scientifically, but it also employs artistic elements like forms, colours, and movements. Therefore, the same material must be handled with artistic and aesthetic sensibilities. , Maps produce a vision of the world, from the position of the cartographer — an image that represents a specific vision, for example, the way the cartographer sees, understands and interprets the world. In this respect, mapping is fundamentally a social and political action.

Philippe Rekacewicz, born in Paris in November 1960, is a geographer, cartographer and information designer. After completing his geography studies at the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne), he became — from 1988 to 2014 — a permanent contributor to the French monthly newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique. At the same time, from 1996 to 2008, he headed a cartographic unit located in Norway of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), GRID-Arendal, and led numerous missions to Central Asia and the Caucasus as part of the multidisciplinary “environment and security” programme. Since January 2021, he has been a research associate attached to the Department of Social Sciences at Wageningen University in the Netherlands as part of the “Embodied Ecologies” programme. He is the co-author of “Cartographie radicale: explorations”, published by Éditions La Découverte in October 2021.

Plattform is Bergen Kunsthall’s series of lectures and debates with artists and prominent thinkers. The event will be live streamed on our website.
