Plattform: Production and reception of art film in Norway

On the occasion of Lene Berg’s exhibition at Bergen Kunsthall, closing 21. August, filmmaker and director of the Nordland Art and Film School Katja Eyde Jacobsen and director of the Norwegian initiative PRISMS Mike Sperlinger will discuss the production, reception and distribution of moving image in a visual arts context in Norway. What are the possibilities for dissemination between exhibition presentations and mainstream cinema?
The conversation will be moderated by Bergen Kunsthall’s director and curator of Lene Berg’s exhibition ‘Fra Fa’ Axel Wieder.
Katja Eyde Jacobsen graduated at the Norwegian Film School in 2006 with the film Herfra til månen. The short film Interlude (2007) was shown in cinemas as a prequel to Roy Andersson's You are alive. Jacobsen made her debut as a feature film director with Yatzy (2009). It is based on a young adult novel by Harald Rosenløw Eeg, who also wrote the film's screenplay. At this time, Jacobsen was one of two female directors from the Norwegian Film School who had directed a feature film – the other was Sara Johnsen with_ Vinterkyss_.
She was one of the directors of the short film Forestilinger (2012), which was shown at Minimalen in Trondheim. From 2016, Jacobsen has been principal at Nordland Art and Film School in Kabelvåg. In 2017, she helped start the production collective ALTERNATIVET together with filmmakers Magnus Mork, Mariken Halle and Guro Brussgaard.
Mike Sperlinger is director of a new Norwegian initiative for alternative film culture called PRISMS. Previously he was assistant director of LUX, a London-based agency for artists moving image, for more than a decade. He is also currently professor of writing and theory at the Oslo Academy of Fine Art and has written extensively on art and film, including a chapbook called Occasional Criticism (2018) about how films are affected by the circumstances in which we watch them.

Plattform is Bergen Kunsthall’s series of lectures and debates with artists and prominent thinkers. This season we present talks and conversations that expand on the ideas of our summer exhibitions with Lene Berg and Damla Kilickiran, and Cruising Utopia – the first live project of 2022. The talks will dive into central themes of Lene Berg’s work: memory, storytelling and working at the intersection of visual arts and film. Italian philosopher Federico Campagna’s contemporary take on the reconstruction of realities has been a strong inspiration for Oslo-based artist Damla Kilickiran.
