Club: Cruising Utopia
BAE BAE
The Bucket Djz
Conceived by Naeem Dxvis

For Bergen Kunsthall’s club night as part of Cruising Utopia, we are thrilled to have BAE BAE in town and the local allyship of the Bucket DJs.

A rising figure in her city's music community, Los Angeles native and multimedia artist BAE BAE is driven by a love for genre-spanning club beats, eclectic electronic rhythms, and the communal joy of a good party. Currently hosting monthly radio shows on NTS and Dublab and co-organizing the hotly-tipped monthly party Hood Rave, BAE BAE's curatorial vision is sharp and steadily evolving. As a DJ, her selections uplift Black diasporic music and femme voices, while her own magnetic productions, slick bootleg edits, and shape-shifting remixes have become club essentials.

Most recently, she contributed to Wayward's 'Waiting For The World Remixes' collection alongside fellow luminous underground talents like Tim Reaper, Kareem Ali, 1-800-GIRLS, and Cameo Blush.

The Bucket Djs host Bergen’s club concept Ispoti&Yanos which highlights the cultural expressions from the Southern part of Africa – Ispoti is a zulu slang for bucket hat. While Yanos, also a zulu word, stands for Pianos or Amapiano.Much like its homegrown predecessor kwaito music (which enables black youth to express their feelings of oppression through the apartheid regime and to create their own identity), amapiano reflects the township musical mood. Its diverse references to '90s house, jazz and church music creates a sound that is sometimes nostalgic and interspersed with cultural elements that many resonate with. Before Amapiano hit commercial radio stations, the ground-up music phenomenon was brewed in the streets, heard in local taverns and shared on WhatsApp communities.

The evening is conceived by Naeem Dxvis – Naeem Dxvis is an interdisciplinary artist and curator with a sentimental approach. Their work has emotional resonance, processing feelings of disempowerment, defiance, joy, nostalgia and desire.
As the creative director and co-founder of BBZ, for the past 6 years they have produced events across the globe and worked in partnership with Tate, ICA, Dazed, Afropunk and the British Council. As a collective, BBZ prioritised the experiences of queer womxn, trans folk and nonbinary people of colour, providing physical and online platforms for emerging queer talent. As an independent artist and creative producer, they remain unapologetically committed to building intentional spaces for marginalized communities through queer feminist practice, and advancing public dialogue around these topics.
