Stephan Dillemuth is a German artist and has worked as professor at the art academy in Munich since 2004. He was a professor for fine arts at Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen (today the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, University in Bergen) from 1998 to 2002, where he produced his seminal study “The Academy and the Corporate Public”. In Dillemuth’s practice, the creation of social spaces often overlaps with his own artistic work.
His research about the contemporary art academy, in combination with the art projects he produced in parallel, are both a manifestation of artistic research as a tool to critically reflect on contemporary society, as well as an investigation into the impact of research as a paradigm on artistic education, which was part of the restructuring of Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen since the 2000s. The talk will look back at the time and context in which Stephan Dillemuth’s project was produced: a moment, which in retrospect seems crucial for the artistic development in Norway at the time.
Stephan Dillemuth studied at the art academies in Munich and Düsseldorf and works with installations, video, performances, painting and publications. From 1990 to 1994 he ran the project space Friesenwall 120 in Cologne together with the artist Josef Strau. Important exhibitions include Lenbachhaus, Munich (2018); Künstlerhaus Graz (2016); Secession,Vienna; Manifesta 8, Murcia (both 2010); Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2009); Galerie für Landschaftskunst Hamburg (2008); Reena Spaulings Fine Art, New York (2007); Galerie Christian Nagel, Cologne; Coal By Any Other Name, American Fine Arts, Co., New York (both 2000).
The talk is part of a series of events in the Plattform programme dedicated to critical ideas in education and self-organised artistic practises.
The event is a collaboration with the teaching and research projects “PolarGraphic” (Prof. Thomas Kilpper) and “Urgent Affairs, Strange Empathy” (PhD Fellow Sveinung Unneland) at The Art Academy – Department of Contemporary Art, University of Bergen.
