Kristian Vistrup Madsen
Workshop: Critisim as (Auto)fiction?

Want to learn about writing art criticism? Sign up by 29 September!

Bergen Kunsthall and Skrivestue/Tag Team Studio invite young artists, writers and new beginners in art criticism to a workshop with Kristian Vistrup Madsen.

The workshop will be exploring subjectivity and narrative in critical writing as ways of challenging on the one hand, the notion of objectivity, and on the other hand “the illusion of the single mentality”. The latter definition belongs to the legendary writer and cultural critic Jill Johnston and refers to the idea that anyone’s subject position may be stable and self-contained.

The workshop will be conducted in English.

The workshop will take place in Bergen Kunsthall on 12.-13. October, and will open with a public talk titled “Art Criticism is Too Easy”, in which Madsen will speak about the contemporary economic and social conditions for writing art criticism.

The talk will take place 2pm-3pm on Saturday 12. October, followed by an evening workshop session lasting from 4.30pm-8.30pm. The second workshop session will take place Sunday 13. October, from 1pm-6pm.

The talk is free and open to all. The workshop has limited spaces, and to join you have to sign up.

It’s easy: Send us your application with a short motivation letter by 29 September. You will be notified by the end of that same week whether you get a spot.

The fee for the workshop is 200 NOK and includes a simple vegetarian meal both days.

Tag Team Studio is an artist run space for contemporary art, run by Cecilie A. Størkson and Morten Kvamme. Tag Team is an open and flexible platform with a focus on the regional art scene. The space was established in 2010, and today Tag Team is situated in Møllendalsveien 17 in Bergen.

SKRIVESTUE is a project initiated by Tag Team, as a response to the fact that we have a flourishing art scene yet surprisingly few art critics/art writers in Bergen. Tag Team wanted to address this issue, and started Skrivestue as a project/program lasting throughout 2019. Six writers have been invited to use Tag Team as their work space during this entire period, consequently turning the gallery into a writers’ hub: Tora Sanden Døskeland, Henning Bergsvåg, Caroline Larikka, Mette Paust-Andersen, Renate Synnes Handal and Vilde Tuv. Each of them has chosen one (or several) Bergen based artists to write about throughout the year. As a part of Skrivestue we also host different events and writing workshops, open to a general pubic. Tag Team’s aim with Skrivestue is to create a community where artists, academics, poets and other curious writers can develop their own style of writing about art.

Bergen Kunsthall is a centre for contemporary art that presents exhibitions, concerts and events by international artists as well as debates and learn-ing activities for audiences in Bergen and abroad. Landmark is our vibrant strand of live events that also includes weekend club nights.

The project is funded by Bergen Kommune, Fritt Ord, and the Creative Europe programme of the European Union as part of Re-Imagine Europe project.
