PLAID & THE BEE
Plaid (pronounced ˈplad) are the London electronic music duo Andy Turner & Ed Handley. They are two of the founding members of The Black Dog, releasing their first EP in 1989 and signing to Warp Records in 1991. They have used many other pseudonyms including; Atypic, Repeats and Balil, but have focusing on Plaid since 1995. Through these various guises they have released 17 albums, from 1991’s ‘Mbuki Mvuki’, to 2016’s ‘The Digging Remedy’. They have collaborated often, with; Bob Jaroc, Mara Carlyle, Nicolette, Felix’s Machines, Björk, Rahayu Supanggah, Random Dance, SARC, The London Sinfonietta and others.
Their first film score was for Studio4c’s, ‘Tekkonkinkreet’, which won the 2008 Japanese academy prize for best animated feature. They also worked with the same director, Michael Arias, on his second live action feature ‘Heaven’s Door’.
Various sources claim they took their name “Plaid” from the Welsh word for “Party”.
ELYSIA CRAMPTON (presented by Utmark)
Elysia Crampton is a Bolivian-American producer, sound artist and conceptual collagist who performs and speaks around the world.
Elysia’s music is an ambitious confluence of ideas, synthesising multiple underrepresented histories, geographies, musical genres and cultural signifiers into addictively colourful sonic material that packs contemporaneous dancefloor weight.
Following last year’s ‘American Drift’ EP on Blueberry Records, her newest work,
‘Elysia Crampton presents: Demon City’ arrives on Break World this summer: a concept album that works as an epic poem with guest appearances from Chino Amobi, Why Be, Rabit and Lexxi, ‘Demon City’ will be accompanied by a live performance entitled ‘Dissolution of The Sovereign: A Time Slide Into The Future’, an audio-visual play that unfolds as a DJ production and live performance, bridging Aymara oral history tradition/theater legacy with Elysia’s own trans-femme abolitionist grasp of futurity.
OLIVER COATES (presented by Borealis)
Oliver Coates is a cellist, composer and producer based in London. In the past year he has performed solo shows in China, Russia, Brazil, Egypt and Australia, and made his New York debut at Le Poisson Rouge. He was the winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award 2011 and is an Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre. He has released records on Prah Recordings and Slip, and collaborates with the London Contemporary Orchestra, Jonny Greenwood (on The Master and There Will Be Blood), Mica Levi (on Under the Skin) and the visual artist Lawrence Lek (on the award-winning video piece Unreal Estate). With Lek, he presented the world premiere of a new work, QE3, at the Glasgow International festival, and he programmed the Southbank Centre’s DEEP∞MINIMALISM festival this summer. His solo LP, Upstepping, was recently released on Prah, and he will release a collaborative record with Mica Levi, Remain Calm, on Slip/Warp in September.
HANNA & KERTTU
A northern electronic forest is their home. Clouds made of soundscapes, cutting lightning beats and spellbinding vocals. After stints in Helsinki and Berlin, Hanna & Kerttu is now a Bergen-based project that combines surreal, otherworldly atmospheres with electronic beats and catchy melodies. The Finnish name is a variation on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. Their last album ‘Forest Pop’ was recorded at Kaiku Studios in Berlin, produced by Jonas Verwijnen (DENA, The Whitest Boy Alive, Moonface) and mastered by Pete Maher (Lana Del Rey, Jack White). Suffused with melodica, glockenspiel and synths, their sound is reminiscent of artists such as Björk, Coco Rosie, and Múm. Music you can dance and cry to, at the same time.
URAÑO (presented by PlayDate)
Uraño is a harsh noise nerdcore glitch-rock duo based in Copenhagen and consisting of Jonatan Uranes (NO) on electronic bass and computer, and Søren Høi (DK) on drums and electronics. Since the band started in mid 2015, Uraño has become known in the underground scene of Copenhagen for the loud volume level and the band´s special relationship to improvisation and composition blending together in unpredictable ways. During performances the duo members manipulate each other’s instruments, creating dynamic expanded soundscapes.
SKATEBÅRD
Skatebård aka Bård Aasen Lødemel is a Bergen based producer of all things electronic. Connoisseurs know that his catalogue oscillates between emotional techno, neo-italo, electro from an alternative future and a Scando-cosmic reinterpretation of pure Detroitian house. His ability to create seamlessly crafted, expertly executed tracks, edits and remixes marks him out as a truly special Norwegian talent. Skatebård releases on labels like Digitalo Enterprises / Kompakt, Radius Records, Supersoul Recordings, Tellè Records, Keys of Life Finland, Luna Flicks, Totally and Sex Tags Mania.
MATO GRYTTEN (presented by Vibbefanger)
Mathias Olaussen and David Grytten are a duo of electronic music producers from Bergen. In addition to making beats for Horses V75 and other rappers, they have debuted as DJs at Vibbeklubb during by:Larm 2016. Since then they have played regularly at numerous venues in Bergen and Oslo, bringing various genres of rap and bass-heavy music to dance floors.
THIAS
ERIN SEXTON
Erin Sexton is a Canadian artist who grows crystals, builds antennas, and makes shelters. Her work is playfully minimal, exploring how we experience matter, space-time, and non-human entities. Research includes: cosmology, energy politics, neomaterialism, infrastructure, quantum paradox, and the history of science. Sexton is a licensed amateur radio operator currently studying at KHiB, while transmitting and exhibiting her work internationally.
For Poekhali! she will create an installation with radio, rope, tarp, and foam that resonates harmonically with the Planck length ( ℓ P ), which is the smallest possible thing in the universe, equal to 1.616199(97)×10 −35 metres. Many orders of magnitude beyond what our technology can measure, the Planck scale is the lower limit of the smallness of things, where reality froths into quantum foam.
BERGEN ART BOOK FAIR will present a mini-fair for Poekhali at Ink. Local publishers, magazine release of Chinese SNACKS featuring Bergen based artists, small workshops, and zine library!
