The exhibition If You destroy the Image, You’ll Destroy the Thing Itself explored the exhibition medium and the role of the viewer in the experience of art. It showed new and older works by the artists Endre Aalrust, Ole Martin Lund Bø, Jan Freuchen, Sterling Ruby and Tatiana Trouvé. The common factors in the individual oeuvres of these five artists are self-reflection on artistic processes, awareness of the social and economic space in which contemporary artists operate, and an interest in the spatial mise-en-scène where the work always has an inconclusive open-endedness.
The title is from a quote from the film-maker David Cronenberg, in which he refers to an underlying notion among supporters of censorship that if you remove the problematical images that surround us, you also remove the actual problem to which the images refer. The exhibition did not deal with censorship explicitly, but several of the works shown do operate with various layers of concealment, modifications, distortions and reinterpretations of some essence that has been the point of departure for the genesis of the work. The catalogue goes into this issue in greater depth in a text written by the exhibition’s two curators, Solveig Øvstebø and Steinar Sekkingstad. In addition the catalogue features an essay on gallery-based art and tautology, as well as a number of reproductions of artworks from the five artists.
