Kobie Nel & Julie Lillelien Porter Talks and readings   In this recorded performative conversation, ‘Rumours’, artists Kobie Nel and Julie Lillelien Porter discuss the theme of rumours within Nel’s practice, specifically in relation to her recent shows ‘Apple Puma’ at Bergen Kjøtt and ‘Of her face I had only a feeling that it appeared heavy’ at Tag Team Studio.

This recording will be streamed live her and be made available later, on Vimeo, Youtube, Facebook and on the programme page for the series.

KOBIE NEL
Kobie Nel is a South African multidisciplinary artist who works in photography, video, text, sculpture and installation. Nel’s recent work, a practice that has mutated out of photography, exhibits an unmistakable desire to give three-dimensional form to the pictorial. But it also demonstrates an important dual examination: of light and colour as fundamental components of representative systems, and as forces that have often worked to her own benefit.

Recent exhibitions include Bergen Kjøtt, Tag Team Studio, Bergen Kunsthall and Galleri FELT in Bergen and internationally at I: project space; Beijing, Hong Kun Museum for Contemporary Art; Beijing, Colour Factory; Australia and The National Portrait Gallery; Australia. In 2017 she published her artist book, Black Lake Monologue, with Bergen based publisher Coda press. Nel is currently residing and maintaining a studio practice in Bergen, where she obtained an MFA from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design in 2016.

JULIE LILLELIEN PORTER
Julie Lillelien Porter (b. 1975) is an artist and curator living and working in Bergen. She studied at The Glasgow School of Art and Bergen National Academy of the Arts and is currently artistic director at Lydgalleriet in Bergen. Underlying interests in her work and thinking are oriented around psychological, corporeal and existential issues, and collaborative and self-organised projects

TALKS AND READINGS SERIES
In response to the limitations in our live program capabilities in 2020, Bergen Kunsthall has produced a new series of recorded talks and readings with local and international artists and writers, developing a dialogue surrounding our exhibition program and exploring practices of local artists which we will be presenting to wider online audiences.

This new series utilises the input of artists and writers to initiate dialogues in connection with our current exhibition program and expands upon themes socially and politically relevant within their own studio practices. Artists invited in the series include Annette Kierulf, Kobie Nel, Elsebet Rahlff and Maia Urstad, with three readings provided by Lisa Robertson, Elvia Wilk and Rebecca Tamás.
