Nina Möntmann in conversation with Solveig Øvstebø
Date
: Wednesday August 28th at 7pm
Venue: Landmark

The book Bergen Kunsthall in Perspective, 2001-2013 looks back at Bergen Kunsthall’s exhibitions, publications and events in the period 2001 – 2013.

Through a total of 15 newly written articles and republished earlier written texts, the institutional model of the “kunsthalle” and the art institution's role as producer, distributor and actor of citizenship is discussed – with it’s starting point in both Bergen Kunsthall’s own program and in a broader, international perspective.

To launch the event, we have invited Nina Möntmann, one of the book’s contributors, to a conversation with Bergen Kunsthall’s former director Solveig Øvstebø. In the book, Möntmann contributes with the text "New institutionalism Revisited". Here Möntmann looks at the term New Institutionalism as it was used descriptively about various contemporary art institutions in the early 00's, and how these institutional models have developed in recent years under increasing pressure from political and economic circumstances many places in Europe.

Nina Möntmann is a writer, critic and curator. She has curated a number of exhibitions, including NIFCA’s programme in Helsinki from 2003 to 2006. She has edited and published various books, amongst others Art and its Institutions (London, 2006) and Die Visualität der Theorie vs. Die Theorie des Visuellen (with Dorothee Richter, Frankfurt / Main, 2004). Möntmann is an active writer and contributes regularly to publications like e-flux Journal, Artforum, Metropolis M, Frieze and others.

Solveig Øvstebø was director of Bergen Kunsthall until June 2013 and is currently director of The Renaissance Society in Chicago, USA. Øvstebø has curated a number of exhibitions for Bergen Kunsthall since the early 00's, and she has contributed as an editor and writer for a number of exhibition catalogues and publications, including the anthology The Biennial Reader which gathered a large number of research-based texts on the topic of international biennials (ed. by Elena Filipovic and Marieke van Hal, 2010).

Möntmann and Øvstebø will discuss today’s current art institutional landscape and the conditions for medium-sized, critically oriented institutions which often have been designated under term New Institutionalism the last 10-15 years
