POEKHALI! Get ready! Workshop: Potential Wor(l)ds Aliyah Hussain and Anna Bunting-Branch   Kunsthallen  Seminar

Saturday 18 August 13.00 - 15.00
for all

Potential Wor(l)ds : an experimental workshop exploring language in sound, gesture and science fiction with artists Aliyah Hussain and Anna Bunting-Branch

Science fiction uses fantasy concepts such as alternate universes, time travel and new technologies to imagine how society could be organised differently. By introducing alternative worlds, dominant hierarchies of race, gender, economic power, work and ruling policies are re-imagined, turned on their head or exploded altogether.

Artists Aliyah Hussain (Manchester, UK) and Anna Bunting-Branch (London, UK) will both introduce how science fiction has informed their artistic practices, and begin the workshop with an introduction to Láadan, a feminist language created by linguist and science fiction writer Suzette Haden Elgin in 1982. Finding herself unable to express certain ideas and emotions in English, Elgin intended Láadan to make space for new words and ways of communicating.

These “potential wor(l)ds” will form the basis of this workshop, to experiment with contact mics, found objects, drawing and our own bodies to create a collective vocabulary.

Open to all ages and free to attend, but with limited spaces so please sign up!

To book a place, please email Eva Rowson or leave your name in the reception desk at Bergen Kunsthall.

The workshop will be led in English, but we can help to translate between Norwegian and English.

Then come back to join us at 20.00 for Poekhali! Landmark Takes Off!
